Inspired by survival stories from history’s greatest explorers and adventurers, such as Scott of the Antarctic and Ernest Shackleton. This day is split into 3 sessions, and working in groups of up to 12, we will focus on the essentials of human survival.
Problem solving
Shackleton’s team encountered many problems on their voyage and had to show great resilience to survive. The children will learn the importance of working together to solve a number of physical problem-solving tasks on their own exciting journey through the woodland. Tasks include:
- Glacier Crossing
- Snow Blinded
- Frozen Sea
- Man Over Board
Survival Ship Wreck Scenario: Shelter – Fire – Water
Having been lost at sea, shipwrecked in a storm and washed up on an uninhabited island, the crew must survive until rescue arrives. All they have is some basic equipment they managed to salvage from the ship, including:
- Kettle and pan
- Water
- Flour
- Sail Cloth
- Rope
- Matches
Using only this equipment and what they can forage from the natural environment, they must make shelter, start a fire and make some bread to stay alive.
High Ropes
Climb the rigging to the crow’s nest to search for land or have a go at stacking crates of provisions to prepare for the voyage. Depending upon timings, 1 or 2 high rope activities can be built into the day’s programme to test the children’s bravery to take on the challenge.
This day can be delivered during the school day (10 am – 2.30 pm) or extended to 9.30 am – 4 pm.
